'Chive Cast 73 - The Expurgated Episode

Skye and Steve speak with Jonathan Robinson about his new Close Encounters of the Third Kind documentary, Who Are You People? Plus we discuss his amazing collection of vintage toys. The only regular feature this month is the MarketWatch because it is an upside down, inside out Vintage Pod that was once much longer and much dirtier but it is now quite pleasant, thank you very much.

MarketWatch: Too-Onebee (2-1B)

Michael L. writes:

Another background character rolls around with another period where there were plenty of sales. As always, I was able to find a good mix across the cardbacks 2-1B appears on (aside from Coin Offer stickers, which I thought I would find for sure). I found a few foreign items as well, and a nice POTF Coin.

Having listened to the show and seen Fredrik's collection, I have gained a real appreciation for the figure. The cardback colour scheme is very appealing once combined with the colour of the figure.

Anyway, onto the data...

I decided to try and create a game format this month. Given the show would hit the podcast airwaves in March, I decided on a March Madness ‘bracket’ format. I’ll admit it was a little confusing as I listened to the guys read it back on the show, but thought I would at least document it here on the blog.

But before I get into the bracket, here's a summary of what we did see:

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

41A -- I found 3 examples of his debut card, all ungraded, with prices of $109.99, $160 and $211.50

47 back -- Only 1 example which sold at $190.89

48B -- 1 graded (AFA80) selling for $262.07 and an ungraded 48C selling for $62.

RETURN OF THE JEDI

65B AFA 85 - $123.61

77 back -- A couple of ungraded MOC's selling for $76.95, $99.99 and $125.00

FOREIGN
Trilogo - ungraded $63.00

OTHER ITEMS

Micro unproduced 1st shot - $411.95, similar to that depicted in the Archive entry for this month's Nugget.

AFA85 Power of the Force Coin - $750

So that's the data summary - and this is how it was turned into a bracket format for Steve to test Skye's guessing ability on the podcast. I did think going in that the debut card was a strong chance of winning the overall bracket...

Here are the brief parameters I set up to create the bracket:
1. Two pools - Empire and Jedi (though I added a few loose graded figures into this side)
2. Pick a random eBay auction per cardback (or loose figure) to determine winner of that round
3. Can only use auction result once; i.e. then find another sale for that cardback in its next 'round'

Here are my seedings before I collected the data:

Empire Strikes Back Round 1:

41A ungraded v 41D ungraded
Result: 41A ungraded ($211.50) v 41D ungraded ($175)
Winner: 41A advances to Final 4.

47 ungraded v 48B
Result: 47 ($190.89) v 48 ($262.07)
Winner: 48 advances to Final 4.

So this will pit an ESB 41A up against an ESB 48 back

Return of the Jedi Round 1:

ROTJ 65B AFA85 v AFA90 loose
Result: ROTJ 65B AFA 85 ($123.61) v AFA90 loose ($149.99)
Winner: AFA90 loose advances to Final 4.

ROTJ ungraded v Foreign
Result: ROTJ ungraded ($76.95) v Foreign (trilogo $63.00)
Winner: ROTJ ungraded advances to Final 4.

So this will see a graded loose figure up against an ungraded ROTJ MOC in the next round.

Final 4 - Empire Strikes Back
41A v 48
Result: 41A ($160 - ungraded) v 48 ($62 - ungraded)
Winner: 41A advances to the championship round.

Final 4 - Return of the Jedi
AFA Loose v ROTJ ungraded
Result: AFA Loose ($59.99) v ROTJ ungraded ($125)
Winner: ROTJ ungraded advances to championship round.

Championship
41A ungraded v ROTJ ungraded
Result: 41A ($109.99 ungraded) v ROTJ ungraded ($99.99).
Winner: 41A ungraded

So, I think in summary I may well agree with Skye... the format was confusing and trying to run a bracket with Vintage Star Wars pieces just didn't quite work. But it's recorded here for prosperity.

I will return to the normal format with Luke Hoth next time. Wampa Wampa!!

MarketWatch: AT-AT Driver

Michael L. writes:

I had some fun with this month's research. Came across lots of MOC's... graded and ungraded. Managed to find a POTF MOC sale along with a Proof, and even an army of AT-AT Drivers. I had no luck however with a Coin Offer MOC (this seems to be our new holy grail of the MarketWatch). And lastly I did find a 48B .... Skye will be envious.

Whilst the market has risen over the past 12-18 months I think it's fair to say that there are still decent deals for MOC's out there. You just need to look. Though once AFA get involved prices are at the higher end, so again the moral is... do your research, know what you are looking for and a good deal can still be had (oh and don't worry about grading).

And here's the data for the month ...

Power of the Force

Whilst I normally go in order of figure release I had to break that to ensure I highlighted this POTF MOC

92 AFA80 Y-NM (C80/B80/F85) $2,200 - eBay link

Not sure if this will qualify for Steve's ' oh man' for the month, but should come close!! Now back to the regular order ....

Empire Strikes Back

Whilst there were some bargains to be had, this was not one of them. To be fair though this was a really nice card, clear bubble and is his debut card.

MarketWatch: Rebel Commander

Michael L. writes:

Here we are with the first "figure of the month" post in our new home. Another background character - the 41 backs really pumped them out. But he was an essential figure in any Hoth battle. And while we (kids from the 80's) no doubt had an extra Hoth Soldier or two, it was always nice to add the Commander to one's Rebels. I can recall his hand being a little on the small side, and fitting a weapon in it didn't give as sturdy a hold as for say Hoth Han or the Rebel Soldier.

As I've remarked a number of times with my MarketWatches, I'm often surprised at just how many variants of the figure sell during the 3 months of data I can access. No let down this month, with all his ESB cardback variants changing hands - as Skye would say, "you could have put a pretty decent run together, and in this case for not a whole lot of money."

There was a good mix with a high end MOC (41E - AFA80) selling for over $400 mixed with quite a few cheaper variants. And we even had a Coin Offer sticker MOC - which has almost become a tradition to post a sale with one of these. Here's a summary for the month, with the average at $140:

And here's the data for the month...

Empire Strikes Back

41A AFA75 (C75/B75/C85) $214.99 - ebay link

41A AFA75 (C75/B75/C80) $140 - ebay link
41C ungraded $134.50 - ebay link

41E AFA80 (C80/B80/C85) $410 - ebay link

41E ungraded $140.50 - ebay link

41E ungraded (with Coin offer) $49.99 - ebay listing

45A Ungraded $80 - ebay listing
47 ungraded $52.89 - ebay link

48A AFA60Y (C75/B60/C80) $120 - ebay link

48B Ungraded $67 - ebay link

48C AFA75 (C75/B75/C85) $199.99 - ebay listing

ESB recap: Quite a nice assortment of graded and ungraded pieces. It always amazes me the volume of pieces swapping hands (and just on ebay). And its not just recent hype (though I'm sure that is aiding pricing), but when I first started watching the market, it was pretty common to find almost all cardbacks selling over a few months for the figure of the month.

His debut card (41A) were nice - with the sale of around $140 for the AFA75 a pretty decent deal (again reinforcing that if you're prepared to settle for a 75 relative to an 80 and / or 85, you can save some good $$). The 45 and 47 weren't in too bad shape and for $80 and $50 respectively they were nice deals for the buyer. The 41E selling for over $400 was a monster sale (and was only an AFA80 !!), fully reflecting the hype of the past 12 months. It was a really nice example though, and I know those 41D/E can be hard to find with a clear bubble. The two ungraded 41E's, with yellow bubbles, were much more inline with where you would think they should end. The Coin offer MOC was great - and how could any focus collector not love that for his Rebel Commander collection!!

Now onto the ROTJ cardbacks...

Return of the Jedi

48D Ungraded $65 - ebay link

Unlike the ESB cardbacks, this is all I could find.

Other items

And lastly, I found an ESB Wampa - AFA80Q with the Rebel Commander (not Luke) picture. This had been listed at a Buy It Now price of $400 and didn't sell. The seller decided to list at auction - and it did well, reaching close to $300. I was actually really keen to add this to my collection - but missed out. Damn it!!

Wampa AFA80-Q (Rebel Commander photo) $281.85 - ebay listing

That's all for the Rebel Commander. Was somewhat satisfying finding all his ESB cardback variants - and at around $140 a pop he hasn't been too impacted by the price hype.

Till next month Wampa Wampa....
